About Very
(Remote – North America)

Very is a fully distributed technology firm led by expert problem-solvers who create efficient, scalable solutions that move commercial, industrial, and consumer products from pilot to production in record time.

We believe that real innovation happens in the grind — working shoulder to shoulder with clients who are building the future. Our team thrives on that energy. When we’re not helping clients deliver business-critical outcomes, we’re refining our craft and celebrating what it means to do hard things well.

We’ve built a collaborative, tight-knit culture that thrives in both remote and in-person settings. We’ve won numerous workplace awards over the years, including Great Place to Work certification and recognition from Parity.org as a Best Company for Women to Advance. Our clients include well-known brands like Vizio, Peloton, Clear, iHeart Radio, and Fellowes — all determined to leverage connected devices and AI to drive meaningful impact. Our job is simple: help them win.

About This Role

We are looking for a Lead Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineer to help design and deliver electromechanical hardware systems for our clients.

This role is mechanical engineering–focused and centers on the mechanical design of products that integrate electronics, sensors, and embedded hardware.

You will work directly with client teams to develop hardware products from early concept through prototyping and manufacturing.

Successful candidates are mechanical product engineers who are comfortable working around electronics and embedded hardware, and who enjoy building real hardware systems.

This role requires a strong combination of:

  • mechanical design
  • electromechanical system integration
  • hands-on hardware prototyping
  • design for manufacturing
  • technical leadership

You will collaborate closely with electrical engineers, firmware engineers, and product teams to bring hardware systems to life.

What You’ll Be Working On

For this role we are looking for mechanical product engineers who are experts in MCAD and comfortable working alongside electrical and firmware engineers to deliver integrated hardware systems.

Some of the traits we are looking for include:

  • Previous experience designing and testing electro-mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) practices for electrical and mechanical.

Exposure to hardware systems involving:

  • Microprocessors, microcontrollers, IoT communications protocols, and common sensors
  • Hardware prototyping tools (3D printers, soldering, oscilloscopes, electronic loads, etc)
  • Low-level embedded firmware or embedded Linux
  • Data collection techniques

Our mechatronics engineers work across disciplines to deliver cutting-edge hardware solutions to our clients, fast.

Outcomes

  • Delivery of mechanical/electrical hardware that meets the time, budget, and feature needs of Very’s customers.
  • Successful design and execution of hardware releases and test plans.
  • Project team adherence to Very’s standard of best practices across all engineering disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design for electromechanical products and systems
  • Design mechanical assemblies that integrate electronics, sensors, motors, and actuators
  • Develop mechanical architectures for hardware products and subsystems
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and production drawings
  • Work closely with electrical engineers to integrate PCBs, wiring, sensors, and embedded components
  • Prototype and iterate on hardware designs using lab equipment and rapid prototyping tools
  • Support hands-on hardware development including mechanical prototyping and electronics integration
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to ensure designs can scale to production
  • Collaborate with suppliers and contract manufacturers during prototype and production phases
  • Provide technical leadership on hardware development projects
  • Mentor other engineers and contribute to engineering best practices
  • Work with the Director of Hardware to improve standards and processes for hardware delivery.
  • Work a target of 38 hours per week on a Very client engagement.
  • Serve as a technical interviewer in Very’s interview process.
  • Support sales in sales activities and statement of work generation.

Requirements

Education

BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or Robotics Engineering

Experience
Required experience includes:
  • 5+ years of professional experience designing and delivering physical mechanical or electromechanical products from concept through prototyping and into manufacturing.
  • Strong experience using 3D MCAD tools (such as SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, NX, Fusion 360, or similar)
  • Designing mechanical assemblies that integrate electronics such as PCBs, sensors, cameras, motors, or embedded hardware
  • Mechanical design of housings, structures, or assemblies for electromechanical systems
  • Hands-on hardware prototyping and testing
  • Experience building and iterating on physical prototypes
  • Design for Manufacturing experience including machining, injection molding, sheet metal, or similar processes
  • Working closely with electrical engineers to integrate electronics into mechanical systems
  • Experience supporting prototype builds and manufacturing ramp
  • Experience leading or owning hardware system development

Strong candidates may also have experience with:
  • robotics hardware
  • IoT devices
  • consumer electronics
  • industrial electromechanical products
  • autonomous systems
  • sensor integration
Technical Skills
Required:
  • Strong 3D MCAD experience
  • Mechanical design of complex assemblies
  • Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
  • Mechanical prototyping and testing
  • Hardware product development

Nice-to-have
  • Experience working with embedded systems or sensors
  • Familiarity with electronics hardware and PCB assemblies
  • Experience working with robotics or IoT devices
  • Experience with hardware lab tools and prototyping equipment

Non-technical Skills
